The Uganda Program of Literacy for Transformation (UPLIFT) helpsparticipants acquire the skills, knowledge, and incentive for a “lifelong self-improvement plan” — coupled with an emphasis on moral education and interreligious harmony.

[Denne reportasjen ble laget etter et prosjektbesøk i januar 2012 og fikk betydning for etableringen av ’Venner av UPLIFT’ i september samme år]

Mens mediene beskriver tilbakegang i demokratisering dame snakkeri afrikanske land de siste 5 årene, med store utfordringer for den bilaterale statlige bistanden, finnes det solskinnshistorier på grasrotnivå. En av disse handler om lese- og skriveopplæringen i West Nile-distriktet langt nord i Uganda, som det norske bahá'í-samfunnet har fått være med å støtte gjennom flere år.

Bahá’í-samfunnet og Norad står sammen mot fattigdom i Uganda

I West Nile-regionen, nærmere bestemt Nebbi District i nordvestre Uganda og ikke langt fra grensen til Kongo, har det vært langvarige kamper mellom to parter: Fattigdom og Kunnskap. Den første har i mange år hatt overtaket, men dette er i ferd med å endres.

“The Functional Adult Literacy Programme (FAL) started in 1992 in 8 districts and now covers all the 56 districts. The FAL Programme is implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development.

The programme targets youth and adults of 15 years and above with special emphasis on girls and women. The programme targets those who missed formal education and those who dropped out of lower levels of formal education. The majority of the participants are able to attain a level of reading, writing and doing numeric computations comparatively higher than that of primary 4 pupils. Under this arrangement, Government is therefore committed to providing non formal education for attaining of permanent and functional literacy and numeracy and development of national awareness of individuals as one of its objectives.”
